Extremely heavy period, any way to stop extreme leaking?
A week and a half ago I was complaining that my period had been going on for 23 days.
Now I am to the state where my period is so heavy that it is leaking–heavily, as well–after forty-five minutes with a new tampon in.
It ruined my day at school; this is only my second one and so I was not prepared when it bled through the tampon, through my pad, through the underwear, and through my pants. Thankfully, I caught it before anyone could tell, but it’s starting to annoy the hell out of me. I can’t find time to go switch a tampon out every time I switch classes. I’m using Super-level tampons, and applicating them “deeply.” And it’s ridiculous.
Is there any way to fix this? Or does anyone with experience know strategies/new methods to minimize the discomfort of the situation at hand?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.
You need to see a doctor if your period has been going this long – it’s normal to have menstrual problems such as heavy flow or irregular cycles when you’re young, but to this degree it suggests that there is something wrong and could potentially cause more problems if left.
You don’t say if heavy periods are a normal thing for you or not, if so it’s known as ‘Menorrhagia’. I myself suffer from hyper-menorrhagia…to put that into some sort of perspective; back when I used tampons and pads, I’d use a super-plus tampon and night time pad but still leak through both and all my clothing within 15 minutes, my periods also last for up to 14 days. I feel your pain! lol
See a doctor first, often there’s no cause but it’s best to rule out problems like endometriosis and get tests for anaemia which can both cause heavy periods and be cased as a result of heavy periods. Be careful as often the pill is used as a quick-fix but it can cause side-effects including heavier flow and may cover-up an underlying cause, also it suppresses your cycles which prevents you learning from them which is vital for your sexual health long-term. It’s an option but look into other treatments like progesterone cream or norethisterone. I highly recommend tranexamic acid, you take three tablets a day for the first few days of your period and it will lessen your flow and length of your periods by up to half, it’s the best treatment for heavy periods.
I also highly recommend menstrual cups, the single best way to manage heavy periods, they are far healthier and more hygienic than tampons so can be worn for up to 12 hours which is at least twice as long as tampons, there are no health risks and they can even be worn overnight which is hugely helpful with heavy flow. They hold more fluid than tampons and pads put together, and have light suction so you don’t get flooding like you do with tampons and there is plenty of warning when they’re full so there’s no worry about leaking all the time. I really cannot tell you how much of a difference menstrual cups make to heavy periods, I’d never even consider going back to tampons or pads. There is a good little article about cups on Scarleteen http://www.scarleteen.com/article/advice/what_are_menstrual_cups
Make sure to eat healthy, even changes to diet leading up to your period will help, make sure you’re getting iron to make up for blood loss, magnesium, zinc and calcium for menstrual health, vitamin E to regulate flow, and vitamins A and C to regulate estrogen levels to lessen flow. Coffee is a good way to lessen flow as it is a vasoconstrictor so constricts blood vessels in the uterus preventing heavy blood loss. Look into herbal treatments like chaste tree which can lessen your flow noticeably, also try taking evening primrose oil or black cohosh capsules taken daily to regulate hormones to help prevent heavy periods, also drinking either vitex tea or a women’s tea blend will help.
