what volume should my amp and guitar be at?
I play a Gibson Les Paul Standard through a Fender Deluxe Reverb and my main pedal is a TS-9 Tube Screamer. Is it better to have my amp volume loud and have my guitar lower like around 3 or 4 and just turn it up when I need more distortion? I am trying to find a spot where I can have my awesome clean tone and then crank the distortion. Should I crank the guitar and lower the amp? Crank the amp lower the guitar?
There’s no right answer. Many players do exactly as you’re describing- control the amount they’re driving their amp with the volume on the guitar. It’s all about the sound.
I played professionally for decades. What I like to do is use a volume pedal. Between that, the guitar volume, and the amp volume you can get all those sweet spots you’re going for. I would not be without a good quality volume pedal playing live. For example, you can get a “rhythm” volume cleaner by turning the guitar way down and cranking the volume pedal… or you can get the same volume “dirty” by doing the opposite.
I’d also trade the Deluxe for something with two distinct (clean / dirt ) channels that is foot-switchable between clean and dirty. You need at least one channel with a master volume so you can crank the pre-amp up for distortion) but limit the overall volume. I don’t like relying on stomp boxes for the dirt.
The Deluxe is an old-fashioned fender amp with two channels – but they’re both “clean”. (second channel is “Vibrato” – right?) Neither has a master. In my experience the “all clean” fender amps have to get way too loud before the tube distortion is usable. Fender makes foot0switchable models but there are a ton of other choices as well. Mesa-Boogie, Dr. Z, etc. etc. Dozens.
