How loud is a 15W tube amp compared to a 30W amp?
I have a 30W line 6 spider III and was thinking about getting the fender super champ xd guitar combo amp. It’s a tube amp and I know tubes amps are louder, but how much louder would it be compared to my line 6? I want to get a louder amp that can play over a drum set and I need to know if the Fender will be able to do this.
Tubes aren’t any louder! 15W of power is 15W of power no matter how it’s being generated. Fender amps are notorious for having a really sensitive volume taper though. They usually have a huge jump in volume between 2 and 3, which can be quite annoying.
You’re not likely to notice the difference in loudness. Doubling or halving the power results in a 3dB change, which is barely perceptible to the human ear. Tube amps sound best cranked all the way up though (when those tubes get nice and hot), so if you’ve constantly been playing at 8 or 9, then you’re sure to notice an awesome difference in your tone.
If your drummer can consistently drown out a 15W amp, he needs to bring himself under control. A drummer that plays full force all the time isn’t of much use to anyone. You don’t want to play that game of “I can’t hear myself, so I’ll turn my amp up” because then everyone does it and you get too loud for your own benefit. It’s totally possible to play heavy music at a controlled volume where everyone can clearly hear all the nuances of the music. Most people just don’t do it, but the bands that do are the ones that get invited back.
