Can I use any Tube Amp Head for a 4×12″ Marshal/Celestion Speaker?
I recently bought from Guitar-Center the following half stack:

The 8-ohm, 120W Marshall MG412 angled speaker cab is loaded with 4 x 12″ custom-voiced Marshall/Celestion speakers that really crank out authentic Marshall tone. The road-ready MG412 cab features reinforced corners and recessed side bar handlesI don’t really like the Amp Head, I want to go for a full Tube Amp Head, but What Im trying to find out is, Can I use any Tube Amp head with this Cabinet?
Actually the correct answer is the exact opposite of Daniels. The head should be more powerful than the cabinet. It is ideal to have a matching head/cabinet, but if the cabinet requires more power to drive it than the head is capable of pushing, it will burn out your amp. On the flip side, if the amp head is pushing more than what the cabinet can handle, then you will blow your speakers. The right answer? If one is stronger than the other, it should be the amp head, just don’t turn it up all the way.
In regards to ohms, that is an electrical term meaning resistance. You can use a head with a cabinet rated at 2, 4, 8 ohms, etc. However, the difference in ohms will have a direct correlation to the difference in watts. Most sales people don’t even know how the formula works, but you can contact the speaker manufacturer for the correct information in regards to it. It may also be on the back of the speaker.
If you got a 100w head, it should still be safe to run the cabinet off of it. However, if you got a 30 watt head, you may run into problems. The ratings of watts in an amp head is not volume, its the power rating at a specific number of ohms. Example, a 100 watt head is not twice as loud as a 50 watt head in regards to decibles.
If you have any doubts about buying an amp head, contact the manufacturer of the amp head and ask them your question. DO NOT ask the sales person. If you buy the wrong thing and your equipment fails, no one will care what that sales person said. They may point you in the right direction, but do the research on your own with whatever you get.
