Someone posted a question about this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16569567 which tested the results of prayersassociated with uncomplicated recovery after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. They also tested the effect on patients of knowing they were being prayed for. The prayer’s didn’t help, and those who knew had more problems.
Were they biased? how?

matt: I’m an atheist. I wonder what the complaint was, in the Christian’s reaction to it, and who agreed.
One thing that occurred to me was that the *anonymity* of the prayers may have affected the results. That is, if the patients thought they were receiving prayers from family members, and really receiving them from family members, that would have played out differently. I respect the scientific method and I don’t see how bias could have entered into this study – I think the study is sound – but I would like to see it repeated with actual family members doing the praying. Could anyone deny that there would be more power in a prayer offered by someone who is closely connected to and loves the patient?
My guess is that if scientists do the praying, repeated experiments will show a zero hypotheses and random distribution (and not because they are scientists – simply because they have no emotional attachment to the person), but that once family prayers enter the picture, you would see a positive correlation between (1) those prayers being offered (as opposed to a control group of no prayers), and (2) LESSER incidents of complications.
