Many Cadiilac components are still made stateside, and there are BMW, Nissan, and Toyota factories right here in the good ol’ US of A.
Hmm.. let’s see. General Electric (locomotives, generators, huge industrial gear), Boeing Aircraft, Caterpillar, John Deere, Harley Davidson, Microsoft software (ever heard of it?), a lot of high-end clothing, Budweiser, Disney, most TV shoes and major movies, most dairy products, most wheat products, tons of stuff.Most of the goods that most Americans consume are, in fact, made in the US. A fair amount of consumer electronics, autos, mid to low end clothing, and mass-manufactured goods are made overseas, but well over 50% of the stuff you use every day (food, soap, toilet paper, magazines, software, gasoline) was manufactured or assembled in the US.
It is true that low-skilled, highly paid manufacturing jobs are disappearing. This is why people invest so much time and money in education and training – so that they can use these specialized skills to get high paying jobs.
And this is what we should be focussing on – education – rather than trying to turn back the clock and force a political solution.We should demand far more accountability from our schools (rather than caving to teachers’ unions and failed bureaucracies) and we should all try to get up the corporate ladder (or open our own businesses) rather than moaning about a way of life that’s long gone, and was only available to a few people for a few decades.
The American middle class started with the GI bill, not with mafia-riddled unions who cost us money and produced shoddy, inferior goods. We should work on our own skills and competitive ability, rather than expecting unions and politicians to hand us cushy, overpaid “jobs.”
