Vomiting food do you retain the fat?
I’m worried about my sister, she vomits after eating, not frequently, but a few times a week. She is on a diet, but does binge on the bad stuff like crisps, ice cream and chocolate, then vomits it up. I’ve tried to talk to her about it but I don’t think I’m getting thru. Can you clear something up for me? Does her body retain the fat and calories even though she vomits within 20 mins of eating it? Or does her body need longer to digest the fat and calories?
not the fat no, but the calories yes,
what happens is that the metabolism slows down, meaning that food gets quickly digested and the calories get stored as opposed to being burned as the metabolism is slowed, to raise the metabolism again the only thing she can do is to spend a week not throwing up. But if she has been doing it for a long time- say a year or more, it could take longer for the body to correct itself, first the weight will go up, tyhen go down a bit, then stabilise, but in the long run the body wont be storeing every calorie it can get.
When you eat anything, and it touches the insides of your mouth, you are digesting it, the mouth has cells in it which can pick up the sugars in whats eaten and digest them immediatly, its why a sugary drink or even just rubbing grains of sugar into the insides of a diebetics mouth can bring them out of a diebetic coma, these are calories that will be stores if your metabolism is slowed due to throwing up foods.
Why does the metabolism slow? well this is because the body is put under stress, first it thinks there are calories there, then it finds there are not, at first it wont know whats going on and weight will drop, but after a short while it will clock it and start to try to protect itself from death or starvation, so it slows down the metabolism,
and it may also throw in afew mega stregnth cravings for really calorific and sugary foods (believe it or not junk foods are all very high in refinded sugars, burger buns, chips and pizzas …etc included, even though they taste savory). this is its way of trying to make sure it still gets its daily calorie amount plus some more, to keep it fropm death, and in addition the metabolism is slowed so if theyweight doesnt stay the same, it will rise and the cravings will get worse.
Medics and specailists usually give an estimate of 50% of the calories being retained per binge. And then theres the stuff that you cannot throw up because its too difficult to. You cant do it all. Trust me.
I have had bulimia and anorexia since I was 16, I am now 26 and just in recovery from 2 years of bulimia, its not easy but do able and the energy levels you get back are amazing, unfortunalty it can cause irrepairable damage, my teeth are wrecked and I cant afford £100 plus a tooth to get veneers- even though I doubt my teeth would stand up to them, and my digestion of food is still very slow, sfood libgers in my stomach for time as its not used to it being there and isnt sure what to do with it. And the feeling of wanting to binge for emotional and physical reasons is still there, though not as strong.
Your friend needs help- professional help, to get over this, there are reasons for her doing this and she needs to address these rather then scaring herself out of it or trying to convince herself otherwise, its the problems that need to be dealth with first and foremost.
good luck, if you have any toher questions on bulimia or anorexia feel free to mail me.
