How much would it cost to get my Telecaster fitted with a humbucker pickup at the neck?
It currently has the stock pickup which is thin, and it would require a little cutting into the scratch plate to do it, but how much would it cost for a guitar shop to do this? (not including the actual price of the humbucker)
Telecasters with humbuckers and mini humbuckers at the neck are common. There are several factory versions in fact. I have an ash “Keef” model with a mini humbucker at the neck. You don’t need to cut the scratch plate because you can go to any GC or Fender’s website and get a new Fender one that fits a humbucker or mini humbucker. The body is already routed to accomodate the larger p/u.
So besides the actual cost of the humbucker, you’re looking at maybe $25 for the new scratch plate and maybe another $40-$70 to have him install the pickup if you don’t know how to solder.
Tip: learn how to do it yourself… if you’re going to be playing guitar your whole life, you’ll save TONS of money if you learn a bit about guitar electronics and how to do your own soldering and set-ups. I do my own minor tech work like that and I bet I’ve saved thousand over the years.
