Can I change my pick guard on my Takamine G series 340C acoustic-electric?
I dont really like the plain pick guard, and want to change to either none or a tortouise shell one
Yes you can. The pick-guard is attached to the guitar with a removable adhesive. They can be tricky. Some come off fairly easily. I use a dull putty knife. Also I have used a a butter knife.
Start slowly around the edges of the pick guard. It will start to separate from the top. If you feel a little uneasy, go to a music store. They will remove it for 5 or 10 dollars.
If your guitar is older, you may notice the wood is much lighter under the pick guard. That wood was unable to age and was not effected by light and other environments. In that case you may want to replace it with a new one.
Most pick guards are a standard size. Some may very depending on the Rosetta or decor around the sound hole. EBAY and other on-line guitar suppliers will allow you to find a pick guard that will fit perfectly. I love the traditional tortis shell myself. Have fun. Sometimes customizing our guitars is as much fun as playing them.
