What do you look for in a good acoustic guitar?
What kind of wood?
What kind of neck?
Type of Inlays?
Body style?
How well it stays in tune?Basically, what separates a pretty good acoustic guitar from a really good one?
You asked a question a very practical but difficult question. When selecting an acoustic guitar, your first decision is to either buy a classical (nylon string) or Western (steel string) guitar depending upon what style of music you intend to play. There is always a trade between price versus quality in any guitar and it is not necessary that high priced guitars must sound and feel good. However having said that there are some simple things one must consider while buying a guitar. Guitars come in two shapes the traditional 8 or the butterfly cut and the dreadnought (country western style). Guitars will come in slim body and fat body – generally jumbo sized guitars have a larger box and the depth of the box determines the loudness of the sound and the richness of tone to a great extent. While buying a guitar consider your body type and how big or small an instrument can you fit into your embrace comfortably while being able to see the frets board and be able to reach the striking position comfortably. Secondly look at your application, if you are planning to play a lot of rhythm and want it to be loud, then buy a Jumbo box size which will serve you well. Once you have identified the guitar type, start looking for the sound quality. Manufacturers can give you all sorts of gibberish on the wood and the neck materials which to a beginner is Greek as you don’t know as yet what impact it has on your playing or sound quality, best way to determine is to play the same brand with two different wood types to understand that difference. However play at least 5 guitars and pick one that sounds bright, crisp and is sufficiently loud for your playing style. If you cant play, ask the shop keeper to play it for you and decide, ask him to play some rhythm and leads to make out how harsh or sweet the guitar sounds. The neck profile should be medium and not fat, it must fit into your palm effortlessly and and you must not feel uncomfortable gripping a chord, neck is pretty much a factor that is more in question for electric guitars as some techniques rely on neck design. Next you must look at the saddle and bridge assembly. An adjustable saddle and bridge assembly is a better bet than a fixed bridge for many reason you will discover when you mature in your playing, Bridges with a steel fret have better sustain that those with plastic or wooden frets. Consider the fret board, the fatter and taller the frets, the better it is as the last longer before getting replaced and is easier to play. Ask for jumbo frets if available. Now having looked at the basic things lets look at the other frills that you may need. Look for tuners that have their gears covered (long time exposure to the elements tarnish and rust the gears and make tuning difficult) covered tuners are lubricant filled and stay smooth for a longer time. Look at the paint / lacquer finish of the guitar. A guitar well made will have a very clear and precise blend of the body color / varnish with the binding . Binding is the white material at the edge of the fret board the thin white strip that run the shape of the guitar sides on the top laminate. Often binding with designs cost more as they add artistic appeal to the guitar. The edges must be finish smoothly and there should not be paint smudges and cracks any where on the guitar. Check the neck joint for any cracks as guitars tend to get warped if stored for long time under string tension and if not played. Most guitars sold today have an adjustable truss rod that allows you to adjust the action. Ask your guitar dealer to set it as low as possible with out buzzing so that you don’t have to press hard to fret a string at any position. Having looked at all these parameters, now look at the color and price of the guitar that you are going to buy and take a call. Although dealers use words such as Rosewood Finger Board, Spruce Top, Mahagony back etc, I have experienced that the quality of wood between guitars of different brands claiming the same frills are poles apart and there is no real measure of what you are getting unless you have seen a guitar being made. However if you have a chance to play a more expensive guitar that claims to have these qualities, do play it to see the difference, that’s the only way to educate your self. If this is your first guitar, believe me you will want one that is better in 1 year, unless 1) You have a hefty budget to get the best guitar 2) You go to a music store with a teacher / guitar player and he picks the best your money can buy. I am teacher with over 18 years of experience in teaching and playing the guitar, so ask for help if you need any.
