Ugh…for playing a 12-string passage. They’re great for getting a full rhythm sound, but extremely difficult to play lead on. That’s where the 6 sting neck comes in.
Double-neck guitars have been around for a long long time, but were really made popular by Jimmy Page. Jimmy had his made by Gibson so that he could approximate songs like “Stairway to Heaven”, “The Rain Song”, and others live. Later you would see artists like Steve Howe (Yes) and Rik Emmett (Triumph) use the 12-string necks for recorded acoustic parts, and then switch to the 6 string for leads.
I’ve got a Carvin 12/6 double neck I bought in 1977 (that’s what I’m playing in my picture). It’s a fun guitar, but it’s heavy as all get out and a royal pain to restring (when you think about , it’s like restringing 3 guitars in one sitting).
If you want to turn a crowd’s head, pull a double neck out. But, I would not recommend it as a primary guitar for performance.
