Guitar neck thickness help! (LP, SG, Strat, Tele)?
I have played a few electric guitars and have noticed that some necks are considerably larger than others, and was wondering if you have owned any of the guitars (not their copies) and could tell me what sort of thickness it is.
Fender Telecaster
Gibson SG
Fender Stratocaster
Gibson Les PaulI prefer guitars with thinner necks (easier to wrap fingers around), any recommendations?
thanks!Hello there,
I understand why at first some people are concerned about the thickness of a neck. I had short fat fingers when I started playing at age 7. I always searched for the thinnest necks. That is not a complete picture of the problem you face. There is much more to consider than the thickness of the neck in finding the neck that is easiest for you to play.
The profile has a big impact on the neck. That is the shape of the contour of the back side of the neck. C is a common shape. There are many others. Radius has a big impact on how the neck plays. The radius is the curvature of the fretboard. As I recall old Fenders were a 7 1/2 inch radiius. Then came the 9 1/2 and the 10s. Some are even flatter now to accomodate the shredders.
Fender Telecaster. Normally the Tele has a vintage V profile with either a 7 1/2 or 9 1/2 radius. Those style necks are generally not thin. Not the thick clucky necks, but not thin.
Gibson SG. I pass on that one. Been too long since I played one to recall.
Fender Strat. The Strat necks vary so much now that I do not feel this is a standard size. Typically the Strat had a C profile with a 7 1/2 radius. Then when Fender moved its operations to Japan the profile was still usually a C, but with a 9 1/2 radius. Later the 10 inch radius was used on MIJ Strats. Not positive about the MIK Strats. The early ones were like the MIJ Strats, usually a C profile with a 9 1/2 radius. Then Fender moved operations to Mexico. Fender has put out so many variations of the Strat, that neck size does differ from model to model. The HM Strats had a flatter radius and a thinner profile (but still a C) to compete with in the shredder market. Strats now can be found in the C, clunky C, vintage V, soft V, and compound. Also the radius can vary greatly. All of which makes a neck feel thicker or thinner.
Les Paul does not usually have a thin neck. Gibson is doing a lot of different variations of the Les Paul now. So, I suspect the neck profile and radius varies from Les Paul model to model.
The total aspect of the neck shape, that is the contour of the back and the curvature of the fretboard combine to make a neck feel thinner or thicker than another comparable neck. Generally shredders want a flatter fretboard. chord players generally want a more curved fretboard.
I do not think that Gibson uses any compound necks. At least I have not seen any. Those are sort of a hybrid where the neck changes as you go farther down the neck. Sort of a mix
I found older Charvel necks to be thin and fast. I believe those were a compound. I have put a couple of those on some of my Strats. With my short fat fingers, I have found the soft V is comfortable to play. It is not on the thinner order, but something about that profile feels comfortable to me. Clapton used the soft V on his Blackie.
Later,
Hello again,
One other factor to consider in selecting a neck is the scale length. Usually Gibson uses a 24 3/4 inch scale and Fender uses a 25 1/2 inch scale. What that means is that the frets on the Gibson necks are slightly closer together than on the Fender necks. I believe PRS uses a 25. There are other varieations, like th old Fender Jaguar which had a 24 inch scale.
Hello again,
I was curious about the neck profile of the SG, so I went to Gibson’s website. They have the same description for the neck of the Gibson SG Standard as the description for the neck of the Gibson Les Paul Studio. That means the SG is probably just as thick a neck as the Les Paul.http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio.aspx
