Wiring Single Humbucker Directly To Input Jack?
Ok, so I’ve got an old Stratocaster and a New Miracle Man Bare Knuckle Humbucker Pick-up.
Now I just want to wire it DIRECTLY to the input jack, no pots, no nothing.
I’ve also got the Ground wire left on the guitar coming through the body, and I’m not sure where to attach that.Oh and by the way, the pickup has more wires that I’m used to, most I’ve seen have got a single black one with a white wire coming off the side,
this one has the black wire, a silver wire that looks like it’s been soldered, a red wire and a white and green one that are tied together.Your help will be very much appreciated, thankyouu
Hey Liam,
There will be 2 points of contact on your output jack, one for the hot, and one for the ground. Visit Fenders website, they have schematics on all their strats. Its easier to look at the photo than describe what to do. As for your pickup, Id imagine that it is a 4 wire humbucker? Im also guessing that your pick guard can accomodate the pickup and there is room in the body cavity for it to sit? Anyway, in regards to the wiring, there are several ways that you can wire it, however, since you are not using a selector, you will be stuck with whatever way you wire it.
To know how to wire it is to know what each wire is. Unfortunately, each pickup manufacturer uses different color codes for the pickups. My guess is that you want to use the humbucker like a standard humbucker (not coil tapped or out of phase or whatever). There are 3 ways to determine what to do…
1) go to the webpage of the manufacturer and see if they have their color code on their website. They normally put the color code in the box if you bought it new, but it sounds like you got yours used.
2) use a multimeter to determine which wire is which.
3) plug your guitar into the amp on a lower volume and with it on, touch the wires to the connections. In the few cases Ive done this, I would put my iPod next to the pickup and see which combination of wires played the loudest/clearest.It is likely that you will twist 2 of the hot wires together and possibly cap the remaining. Once you figure out the combo you want, solder them in. I would advise using a SPST toggle switch so you can at least turn your guitar on or off since you won’t have a volume knob.
