a decent project guitar?
im looking for a decent project guitar and i was looking at this
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Jackson-JS30RR-Rhoads-Electric-Guitar?sku=520306
i was thinking of changing the tuners (for locking tuners), pickups (to EMG’s) putting in strap locks, changing the tone and volume pots if i don’t like the ones on the guitar and then changing the tone and volume knobs when im done with all the other stuff
1. will this be a good guitar for that (i dont need an amazing guitar and i definatly do not want a floyd rose because my tuning goes from standard to C )
and
2. (estimated) about how much would all that cost me (mainly just getting the pickups and the new tuners installed, i can do the strap locks and tone/volume knobs myself and im not 100% sure if im going to change the tone and volume pots)
wow you obviously cant read NO LOCKING NUT OR TREM there can you read thatSure!
My only question would be if you really wanted that particular guitar… flying v’s are such a PITA to play sitting down!
The other thing I wanted to throw out there is that because it has an alder body, it will already by a little light in the bass frequencies. Now, this may not be an issue – detuning on a guitar with a body like this will most likely result in a sound that is more defined vs chunkier… good for note clarity, for instance.
Because of this, I would suggest waiting on the pickups until you have a chance to evaluate how it sounds – if you want more bass, and you can’t get it from your amp, then you won’t necessarily be uber happy with EMGs, as EMGs tend to have a little less bass response already. Instead, you might want to consider Seymour Duncan Blackouts.
My buddy has played exclusively through EMGs the entire time I’ve known him, and he’s always gotten a really killer sound, even through his Marshall MG (he plays thrash metal and plays in a band that sounds a lot like System of a Down crossed with Chevelle, and sounds absolutely *killer*)…. but I bought him a set of Blackouts for his birthday, and I think I’ve made a convert for life! He has said that it has a thicker, deeper tone to it, and that drives his lower end a lot better…. in the band he plays in Drop D down 1/2 step, ie Drop C#. I’m not 100% certain, but I believe his guitar has a mahogany body….
A number of the reviews do state that its good for metal, but the one saying that its great for shredding is right on the money. I have a Jackson Dinky, and its not great for low end chunky stuff (even tuned Drop C#), but it has a great lead guitar sound. I would expect the same from this particular model as well.
When I switched from the Jackson to an LTD EC-100QM I was quite surprised at how much low end I picked up going to basswood. Maybe compare against that or an EC-50? They’re inexpensive, but they play well once set up properly and sound great with decent pickups….
Good luck!
Saul
