Nylong Strings vs Steel Strings…which do you prefer?
I’m just starting to play guitar and have been playing a steel string guitar for 2 days and my fingers hurt sooo bad! I went to a music store and messed around with a nylon string guitar and it was MUCH easier on the fingers. This makes me want to take back my steel string guitar and exchange it for ones with nylon strings. Simply because of the easier playibility. With my steel strings i seem to get alot of sqwuaking and what not…just bad sound. These nylon strings are looking pretty good right now…what do you think?
You’re right, nylon strings are much easier on the fingers when you start, but they’re not really designed for strumming and plectrum work. It won’t hurt them, but you will always get a fairly mellow sound, without any of the brightness of steel strings. There are also little details like classical guitars don’t usually have straps and stuff like that.
It depends upon the sound you want to get. Go back to the music shop and try out some more nylon strung. See if it is a sound you like or can at least tolerate. If it isn’t, it’s back to the blood, sweat and pain, I’m afraid. The lnly thing is, if you keep practising, the pain will go away, and it will sound better.
I taught myself on a cheap steel strung back in the sixties, and have been playing ever since- I now use nylon, steel and 12 string guitars.Hope this helps
