Stash Tin Sticker

Decoupage on a tin: varnish and/or podge?

I bought some stash tins with decorative decals (stickers) already attached that I would like to seal as the decals are peeling away and could easily be damaged. I have never done decoupage before, is it sufficient to apply a coat or two of high gloss varnish (I already bought some) or do I also need to apply podge?
Thanks for both your answers! I will keep this question open a bit longer in case I can get some more useful information. What I am essentially asking is if the varnish also acts as a glue i.e. will it hold the decal in place as well as providing a protective layer? The decal is not peeling badly yet.

First, you need to re-glue the parts of the decals that are peeling. Do it carefully, under good light, with tweezers, and carefully smooth the surface to remove any air bubbles without dislodging the re-glued parts. You can use any permanent glue suitable for decoupage that you like.

When the glue is dry, you can apply the varnish in thin coats. It may take several coats of varnish to get the finish you want. Multiple thin coats are superior to one thick coat.
