Do I need a humidifer for my acoustic guitar?
I recently bought a Takamine G406s acoustic guitar that is quilted maple and solid spruce top with mahogny neck, so my question is do I need a humidifier for it? Also, how do you know when you’re guitar is drying out? I’ve heard people leave comments on youtube videos about guitars sounding dry, so what’s up with that?
If you’re living in Death Valley, you might need a humidifier over the years to keep the wood from drying out. But most anywhere else, you’ll find at least 20% humidity on a regular basis (which is good enough), and 40% more regularly. Anywhere there is water, you’ll find humity be be at 60%, all the way up near 100%. I’d be more worried about a DEhumidifier in that case to keep the wood from becoming warped. Dry, referring to sound, is more of a metaphorical term. For your guitar, your best bet is to talk to an experienced music store for proper care. Not just some clerk who thinks he knows some answers, but the actual person in charge who knows his instruments.
