Guitarists: How is this Rig going to sound?
I’m getting a Seymour Duncan Blackout AHB-1 pickup installed in like 2 weeks or less. It will go something like this:
Godin Exit 22-S w/ Blackout AHB-1 –> BOSS Metal Zobe MT-2 — > Traynor DG60R
I have a lot more pedals including effects but I just thought I would name the distortion. Thing it’s face-melting material?
Absolutely, although with the caveat that you’ll have to do a little bit of tweaking to make it work for you.
So, once again it falls to me to disagree with the other answerers…. I don’t understand why people don’t like the Metal Zone so much… don’t get me wrong, it means that I was able to pick mine up for pretty cheap used, but still…
But let’s start from the top. The Blackouts are pretty hot, but they’re great – lots of bass, lots of treble, you’ll have a good place to start your tone. When you plug it in, listen carefully, especially if you’re not overwhelmed right from the get go. Pickup positioning is everything with active pickups… too hot, or sound too compressed? Try lowering the pickups a little bit. Not hot enough? Try raising them. Actives can be raised right up to the strings – as long as the strings aren’t hitting the pickups, they can literally be that high without affecting anything negatively. Too trebly? Lower the treble side of the pickup…
For me, the bass side is the important side – you don’t want it too high, you don’t want it too low. This is unfortunately something that many guitarists don’t even think about, but can make such a huge impact on your tone!
The Metal Zone is a great pedal – if you like its basic sound, and if you know how to use it. Think 80′s metal… hair metal, early Metallica, thrash metal, that stuff. That is the basic sound of the Metal Zone, albeit with variations. So scooped mids, tight bass, lots of treble. If you want Recto chunk, ie that deep chuggy stuff, then this is not the pedal for you.
I love it – I use it for recording mostly these days. Less bass is good for fitting into the mix easily, making the Metal Zone a good pedal for recording and playing live. Again, though, not for deep detuned metal…. I use the Metalcore for that, it’s a pretty solid pedal.
What really makes the Metal Zone shine, though, is its EQ – specifically, the Mid controls. What most guitarists don’t “get” is that EQ is everything in high gain. Whether its Dimebag Darrell boosting his mids before his distortion pedal then cutting them after the distortion pedal (he used two MXR EQ pedals for that) or Michael Schenker using his wah pedal in a forward position to give himself a high-mid boost to help him cut through the mix, EQ both before and after distortion is incredibly crucial.
The Metal Zone has a built in selectable frequency Mid boost/cut. I prefer a gentle cut a little below halfway, but you can get everything from Cannibal Corpse to Slayer by using this control carefully with the High and Low controls.
You can also try running this straight into your power amp – your Traynor has an fx loop, right (plug in to the fx return in that case)? Or a line in? Try plugging into that instead of the normal input…. it’ll give you a more open sound that works better some of the time. You’ll have to control your volume with your pedals or guitar, though, usually, if you do that….
I would urge you to get an EQ pedal, no matter what you do – it will give you the ability to sculpt your tone, from minor corrections to very over-the top cuts and boosts. Works most obviously after distortion, but can be useful before distortion to…. Boost mids before distortion, cut them after. Cut bass before distortion to give more clarity, boost low mids to give warmth (before or after), and boost around 3khz to give more “cut” or “attack”.
Good luck!
Saul
