and i am playing back in black by ACDC plzzzzz helpGreat question and also a curse of us all. We are always looking for the perfect tone! But a few pointers should get you pointed in the right direction. I have a section of my website dedicated to this very topic. www.toneslinger.com
For your guitar, set your pickup selector in your favorite position. If you are going to play mainly rhythm maybe you want to set it to the neck or neck/middle or neck/bridge setting. Then, turn the volume control all the way up and set your tone control halfway at 5. If its going to be a lead tone, try the middle/bridge or just the bridge pickup.
Get your amp “nooned” Most amps are voiced to run tone nuetral with all their settings set at high noon. {xtypo_quote_right}Most amps are voiced to run tone nuetral with all their settings set at high noon{/xtypo_quote_right}Start by turning the gain and master volume all the way to zero and set your bass middle and treble controls pointing straight up at 12 o’clock in the NooN position. We’ll call these settings 5. Now turn your master volume up slightly and then slowly turn the gain up until youve got the approximate overdrive or clean sound you are looking for. Next, turn up the master volume until its at a comfortable volume.
Its now time to set your amp tone controls to your liking. We’ll start with the BASS control. To hear the maximum range, try playing chords that use all six strings of the guitar. A E major chord or a Barre chord using the E Major form works good here. Listen to the sound as you play. If the sound is too muddy sounding or seems to boomy, slowly lower the bass control until you are happy with it. If it sounds too thin for your taste then raise the bass control slowly until you are happy with it. {xtypo_quote_right} If you start hearing your notes breakup and become distorted, you will need to lower the gain knob as you raise up the bass and treble{/xtypo_quote_right}
Next, address the TREBLE for the high frequencies. Playing the same chords, if you percieve to hear more of the lower end notes and the higher notes do not sound clear, raise the treble slowly while playing the chords. If the sound is sort of raspy and thin and the higher strings seem to be ringing louder than the bass strings, then lower the treble. Also, Listen to the overall sound. We’re trying to keep a clean sound. However, some eq’s will raise the volume of frequencies through the gain stage. If you start hearing your notes breakup and become distorted, you will need to lower the gain knob as you raise up the bass and treble.
Once you got the bass and treble balanced to your liking its time to mix them together. The MIDRANGE control I always set last. Its all the frequencies between the bass and the {xtypo_quote_left} Most of the character of a guitar and its amp lies in the midrange control.{/xtypo_quote_left}treble, hence the name “mid” Most of the character of a guitar and its amp lies in the midrange control. If you were to crank this knob all the way up, you would hear a sort of “honking” kind of sound. If you lowered it to zero you would think your sound was dead. Feel free to adjust this know back and forth until you find something that you really like the sound of. If you aren’t finding anything you like, then reset your bass and treble to noon and start over. Also, remember, as you raise the midrange control, you might have to lower your gain again.
When you are done with your eq, double check your gain again, lower it to zero again, and raise it up until it starts to break up and then pull it back until its a nice pristine clean sound.
With that, you should have the best possible tone out of your guitar and amp. Remember how we put our tone control on the guitar in the middle? You will find that if you eq’d your amp to this setting, your guitar’s tone control will be more responsive and give you a better range of tone and more control.
