Which is a better guitar?
Right now, I’m using a fender starcaster acoustic dreadnought guitar that I got from an acoustic guitar pack. I’ve decided it’s time for something new, preferably a bit smaller since i have small hands, and the guitar is kinda big for me. haha So, I’m stuck between The Oscar Schmidt OG10CE by Washburn, or the OG2CE model. I want a good acoustic/electric guitar that sounds good unplugged, and might be easier for me to play considering the fact that I do have smaller hands. Your opinion or reviews? If you want to recommend another guitar, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks!
Any of the two guitars here will be just fine. The Concert OG10CE has a slightly smaller sound box, so I would go with that if reach was an issue. If this is a Grand Concert type of size, then the sound box should also be a little thinner.
The drawback with smaller guitars is of course that they have slightly less volume than the larger types, in the lower end in particular. This i not an issue for most players though and many prefer this “thinner” sound over a more boomy large box.
As for the “small hands” issue, any adult size steel string guitar can be played by any regular person from about the age of 13. I haven’t met anyone who claim they had small hands who couldn’t handle a full size steel string guitar yet.
I do have met a lot of folks though who have had problems with guitars with non-existent or poor set-ups. Also the larger Jumbo and Dreadnought sizes can be a bit much for some smaller players. If you combine a bad set-up with a large guitar, then you may have problems indeed.
Another thing is that some acoustic (and electric) guitars have really heavy/bulky necks, making them much harder to play.
A well adjusted steel string acoustic guitar with light strings, a great neck and low action is usually the way to go for most beginners – small hands or not. You can read more below about a proper set-up if you’re interested.
The Oscar Schmidt models tend to be well reviewed. I haven’t tried them myself and I can’t say whether or not the necks are slim and player friendly. A brand which tends to have good necks is Ibanez.
The best way to find out is to try them out for yourself. And remember, do get your guitar properly adjusted by someone who can adjust it to your liking. This is really the one major thing most people forget
