New guitar neck wood?
I’m making a guitar with a body of swamp ash and a quilted maple veneer. The fretboard will be ebony. What would an ideal neck wood (sounds good and looks good) for this combination?
I want to use a body shape somewhat unique, something not too widely copied (like a strat or les paul), but at the same time, I don’t want anything too obnoxiously radical or wild. So I’m going with a design that is sort of a mix of a Jazzmaster and Brian May’s Red Special. I’ve made sure that it isn’t a copy of either, however. I’m using 3 single coils and I’m going with a heritage cherry sunburst, but I’m staining the grain of the wood a very light black, to make the waviness of the quilted maple stand out.I’ve always been partial to maple necks. Maple is strong enough to resist bowing under pressure and it’s the perfect weight to counterbalance swamp ash bodies. I imagine that a maple neck/ebony fretboard pairing would make the perfect guitar neck.
By the way, the guitar you’re making sounds gorgeous! What body style are you going with? And what color?
