what type of strings should i buy for my Gibson SG?
i wanted some Ernie Ball strings but i have never bought new strings and i dont really know if i matters what type i get like: nickel wound, reinforced plain steel, pure nickel etc…
its a personal preference, each kind feels and sounds a bit different. They don’t last forever so just pick a set and try them, then see what another set is like next time you restring.
I’ve used Ernie Ball super slinkies on my Les Paul for ages. These are the ones that start out with 009 as the high E. If you aren’t used to playing light gauge strings you might want something heavier to offer more to pick against; in that case, try a set that begins with 010 instead of 009. I think they call these Regular Slinkies.
If the new strings buzz or fret out (or are too high off the neck), get your truss rod adjusted (or go back to the same gauge strings you used to use.) Adjusting a truss rod takes 5 minutes and costs little to nothing. There are a number of websites that show how to do it yourself. But don’t adjust it more than a quarter turn by yourself. If that doesn’t solve the problem, take the guitar to a luthier. Turning your truss rod too far can ruin the guitar.
