Can someone help with my high volume guitar sound problem?
I play mostly heavy music, Tool, Deftones, Helmet, Alice in chains etc. When playing with my drummer muted notes are just thundering, but when I want to ring out the volume and “impact” just drop out. It’s loud but loses its “balls” I want the muted lines to not be so overpowering. Some song examples would be Deftones My Own Summer or Tool’s Undertow. I’ve tried rolling the low end on my amp and lowering the volume on my guitar when playing muted lines. I have a late 80′s(?) charvel mopdel 4 with active pickups and a mid-boost circuit. Could this be the problem? Am I driving the preamp too hard with this guitar even when the volume is way down?Would a compressor/limiter help? Thanks
Active pickups could be the problem. Not sure about your tone, but i’ve never heard active pickups that i like. Try rolling some midrange out of the amplifier and giving it some more treb and low. If that doesn’t work, look at the distortion. Is it a pedal or amplifier gain? Many cheaper distortion pedals don’t faithfully boost the attack and response of guitars, but again, not sure about those active pups. Try a different guitar and see.
