guitar tone fucked up?
hello, I have several electric guitars. It seems that on every guitar except for my Ibanez RG120 I can play Sweet Child O Mine perfectly. It sounds perfect on everyone except for that Ibanez.
I checked the tuning on it it is in tune. I know that it is because I have several tuners. They all are stringed with the same strings (Ernie Ball Power Slinky). Same amp (Line 6 Spider). They all have 2 double humbuckers.
The tone just seems to be way different on the Ibanez only for Sweet Child O Mine. I can play any song and it all sounds the ame on every guitar including the Ibanez. So why dosent that song sound right on The Ibanez? (sounds way different). What can I do to fix This?
(the reason that i wanna play it on the Ibanez is because that is my easiest playing and fav guitar)The most likely problem is the intonation of the guitar. Intonation is the ability of a guitar to play in tune with itself across the entire fingerboard.
The intro for “sweet child” is played at the 12th through 15th frets on the guitar. If a guitar is not intonated properly, than notes in this range will sound “off”. They are actually slightly out of tune with the rest of the neck.
You can tune the guitar with an electronic tuner and the open strings will be fine. But, as you move up the neck, the notes will begin to sound more and more out of tune. This becomes more noticeable the higher up the neck you go.
Adjusting the intonation requires that you move the saddle piece for each string forward or backward. It is by doing this that you are actually slightly altering the length of the string.
To do so on your guitar requires that you loosen the alan screw at the FRONT edge of each saddle piece and move it forward or back until it is in tune with itself.
You can check this by using your tuner and playing the string open, then at the 12th fret. They should be in tune with each other. If not, than you will need to move the saddle one way or the other until they are in tune. You can further adjust this by playing the 12th fret HARMONIC and comparing it to the actual fretted note at the 12th. They need to be perfectly in tune with each other for the intonation to be correct.
Once you have it in the right spot then tighten the alan screw down to hold it in place. Do the same on all six strings. *NOTE, the G string (3rd string) is often the most “out of intonation” so be sure to pay special attention to it.If you do not feel capable of doing this procedure, then take the guitar to your local music store and let them do it for you.
