How can I install an electrical outlet where a hardwired appliance is currently located?
Here’s the deal… I don’t know too much about electrical work, so I may not be using the right terms.
I have an OLD dryer which is hardwired to the circuit breaker. I’ve already “cut” the wire, which is plastic sheath with 4 thick wires inside… red, black, white, and bare. (I believe that this is a 220-volt thing?) So now I have those four wires exposed, and of course the circuit breaker is off. I want to install a “regular” outlet (110-volt, I believe?) where I can plug in my new economy dryer, and other small appliances (iron, laptop charger, etc.) How can I do this without any “major” electrical work? If I’ve researched correctly, I think that I can get a 110-volt outlet which can handle this “thicker” gauge wire, and just cap off one of the two hot wires (i.e. red). Is it this easy? Or will I break code and cause an explosion??

I agree with freakboynv2000 (a real electrician). Your #10 wire will fit under the screws of a 20 amp 120 volt receptacle just fine. Use the black and white and bare on the receptacle. Black on the brass, white on the silver, bare on the green screws. Red to no where, stuff it in the box. Turn off your main breaker (have wife hold flashlight) and remove the 2 pole 30 amp circuit breaker (240 volt). Install (2) 20 amp single pole breakers in its place. Connect the black wire to one of these new breakers. The other breaker will be a spare and just occupies the space in the panel to keep someone from poking their finger in there. Do not connect the red wire to anything. Turn on main breaker. As feakboy said, check to see that the white wire is connected where all the other white wires are connected in the panel. Same with the bare wire. This will comply with the electric codes and work just fine.
