ignition problems on my 1984 1.3 VW polo?
I have had ignition problems with my Polo 1.3 formel E 1984 model. Any damp weather would make it hard to start. Came to the conclusion it was in the distributor since HT leads have been changed 4-5 years back along with distributor cap. Last summer changed plugs, old ones were decently grey. I have taken the distributor off today to clean it, checked my contact breaker points (which look old but since it’s the first time I look at such things I cannot compare it to anything really) and made them clean and touching each other perfectly (sand paper). Did roughly (give or take a mm) check the gap as per specification. Now replaced the lot with the rotor arm aligned with #1 cylinder TDC groove (I think?)… and the result is a car that is even less likely to start. I can hear that only the started motor is doing anything.
Anything I’ve done wrong?Fit a new set of points and a condenser,(they`re cheap),then set the timing.It`s no good having the timing at TDC,it sould be set BTDC or ATDC,(before or after top dead centre.You need to find out the settings.
You could try running the engine until it reaches normal temperature,and then slacken the dist. bolt/s or nut/s,then with the engine running turn the dist. until you get the fastest tickover,then back it up a fraction.Now tighten the dist. and take it for a run,if it pinks,(a rattling noise),back off the dist. a fraction again.Do this until pinking stops.
