The Physics of Electric Guitar Pickups??? Physics/Music I suppose…?
Hi Everyone! I am rather distressed. We are doing a unit in Physics atm and I am rather stuck on this concept… with electric guitar pickups what does increasing the number of turns have to do with the sensitivity of the coil to the vibration of strings… why does it happen? What does electromagnetism have to do with it? I’ll be honest this is for an assignment, so references are great… I understand if you don’t want to help cause its an assignment though… THANKS!
Opps sorry! It is Year 12 Physics and its going on my grad record… unfortunatelyIt has to do with faraday’s law, which can get into some pretty heavy math. but i’ll try to simplify to concepts.
when a magnetic field is near a wire, a magnetic flux is present on the wire. this magnetic flux is related to the strength of the magnetic field and its direction, as well as the area of which the magnetic field passes through it. If the total area of which the magnetic field field passes through is increased, so does the magnetic flux.
Suppose the coil had one turn. It’s cross-sectional area would be pi*r^2, in which the magnetic field passes through. However, if you increase the number of turns of the coil, the cross-sectional area would be equal to the number of turns times the area of each turn, which increases the magnetic flux.
Faraday’s law is simply that whenever a magnetic flux is changing over time through a coil (such as via a vibrating string), then an induced voltage is generated in the coil. If the magnetic flux passing through the coil is large, so is the induced voltage. So if we increase the number of turns, we increase the magnetic flux, and thus the induced voltage.
