on a pickup selector on a guitar, if the switch is in the ‘down’ position, is it selecting the bridge pickup?
It really depends on which kind of guitar you own. Guitars with three pickups typically have a 5-way blade switch. While guitars with only two pickups generally have a 3-way toggle switch.
On a 5-way blade switch (Like a Strat), the positions correspond to the pickups in a certain order. Position 1, closest to the neck, is the neck pickup only. Position 2 is the neck plus the center pickup. Position 3 (center position) is the center pickup only. Position 4, is the center pickup plus the bridge pickup (for an out-of-phase type sound). Position 5 is the bridge pickup only.
On a 3-way toggle switch (on most Gibson or PRS guitars), position 1 (typically “up”) is the neck pickup only. Position 2 (center) is the neck pickup plus the bridge pickup. Position 3 (“down”) is bridge pickup only. On a Tele style guitar, there’s a 3-way blade switch, which functions left/right as opposed to up/down. Position closest to neck is neck pickup only. Center is both. Position closest to bridge is bridge pickup only.
