Is this a safe way to paint my guitar?
I want to paint my Epiphone Les Paul in a EVH style finish. However, I dont have the money to get it professionally painted, so I want to do it myself.
Currently, I have white spike tape placed where I want the stripes. My plan is to cover the rest of the guitar (pickups, knobs and all) in masking tape, then remove the spike tape and put white spray paint where the spike tape was.
I’m just worried about how this will affect my electronics. I figure since they’re covered in masking tape they’ll be ok, but I’m not sure.
Will this method harm my electronics?You’d be better off taking off all the hardware. If you rely on masking tape the electrics could possibly get damaged by particles of spray paint getting into the coils of your pickups. Also you’ll get overlaps with the paint even with masking tape, and this will just look very poor. Knobs and switches are easy enough to take off with a spanner/ adjustable wrench. Pickups you can unscrew at the corners of the plastic rectangle they’re fixed to. What I did in the past was to snip the wires between the pickup and the body. Label them first with a sticky label just so you get them the right way round when you come to solder them back together.
