i bought a bass, and trimmed my nails, should i use a pick or my thumb?
i have a bright red Squire Jazz Bass with just the E and the A strings on it.
I actually have a degree in electric bass performance. You can really use any style of picking you want. It’s a matter of taste. The most common style is the overhand two finger style. Using your index and middle. It generally tends to be the fastest and easiest way of getting an intimate feel because constant skin to string contact. This isn’t to say that the others don’t have their places, and an astute bassist will know the proper time and song for using each style. Generally, although there are exceptions, a pick is used in rock and punk genres. Although not as “meaty,” a pick is good way of cutting through loud guitars to make yourself heard. Thumb slapping is another technique originally contrived to simulate bass and drums striking in unison. It achieves a percussive, spanky kind of sound. Generally it’s used in funk. Experimenment, listen, talk to people. Find a way that’s comfortable for you. Find out how your favorite bassists play. And most importantly, play A LOT!
