Drilling Holes In A Guitar For A New Bridge…?

I have a Gibson Standard SG, and I want to convert it into a 100% accurate Tony Iommi signature – which means fitting a Schaller 456 bridge. Problem is, the standard Gibson bridges are 75mm from peg to peg, while the Schaller 456 is 82.6mm from peg to peg.

How would I go about drilling holes that are so close to the originals, and then filling in the tiny amount of space ??? Any help would be HUGELY appreciated…

Fill the holes with dowels and PVA glue making sure the dowels extend into the bridge plate which is inside the body and just under the bridge.

Before you begin this project you will want to be sure you have the neck width you need so that the “E’s” don’t run off of the fret board edges.

Just tape your new bridge centered over the existing one and use some string as a straight edge.Pull the string tight over the E slots in the nut and to the bridge pin holes. This way you can see what kind of room you have on the fret board.

Assuming your bridge has predrilled bridge pin holes,Glue it on to the the body before you drill the holes into the body.Your new bridge will then be your hole guide.
Be sure that the lacquer is removed from all areas the new bridge is glued to in order to insure good adhesion.Titebond makes a good white PVA glue that works well.

Make sure you get your bridge centered and you get the proper distance from the nut.
Generally, on a 22 fret guitar, the distance from nut to the 14th fret is also the distance from 14th fret to saddle slot.
