Why 1,2,3rd strings are plain steel for nickel plated string set (for E guitar)?
I looked at the electric guitar string set from Fender and FirstAct(from Walmart).
It says it’s nickel plated strings but only 4,5,6th strings are nickel plated and 1st,2nd,3rd strings are plain steel. Why is that? Is it same for all other nickel plated string brands?
Does Ernie Ball or Dadario has all nickel plated strings for all 1~6th strings? (because I heard they’re good strings.)
To answer yuor question simply. The thinner the string, the higher you can tune it without affecting the tension. By having 6 different size, you can 6 different pitch BUT, the tension is equal on all the strings once it is in tune.
To get the 1-2-3 strings to a higher pitch, companies needed to take the wrapping off and just make the inside core thicker so that the string could be tuned without increasing the tension. Otherwise, could you imagine having all wound strings ? The tension would be awful on the 1-2-3 strings.
Mind you, that Classical guitars strings DO have a 2nd and a 3rd which is wounded BUT, it is a nylong wound, not bronze . That is the only way to keep the tension balanced on the strings.
A bass guitar is different. The winding can start very thick and end up thinner. That is easier to compensate than a regular guitar.
