Electric Guitar wiring..Pls help!?
I bought a used hollow body electric Les Paul copy by Stellar (Mercury 003). There is a very thin hairline crack at the base of the neck (No movement, seems sturdy) and I can’t get the thing to play through the new Marshall practice amp. I’m using a Monster universal cord (also new) and while I don’t know anything about guitars, I’m tending to believe there may be a wiring issue, but its hard to get a good view through the F holes or the jack. (I unscrewed the jack/plate to see if the wires were soldered on, and that seems to be fine in that one location-for everything else, its nearly impossible to see)
So, long story short, anyone know how much it costs to fix the wiring? I’m moving cross-country in one week, this is my first guitar, and I’d like to keep it, but if it costs a lot to fix the wiring, then I guess, sadly, I’m better off getting my money back…First, take the plate out again, then plug the patch cord into the plug.Make sure that the contacts are touching the cord, or you`ll get no sound. Remove the plug and bend the contacts so that when you slide it in it touches both the tip and the side ot the plug.
Second, with the patch cord plugged into the marshall with the volume up a little , take the other end and touch your finger on the end. If you hear a hum or static when you touch and don`t touch the end, the cord is fine. If not, replace the cord.
Third, If all else fails and you are not savvy with a soldering iron, take the guitar back if you can, and if not talk to a guitar shop where the fix should be in the 20- 50 dollar range, depending on the type of rewiring that needs to be done.
