Guitar Question! How do you know when to play chords on the lower part of the neck?
I learn some guitar tabs from tab websites but those tabs are always at the very top of the neck. In videos of people playin the same song they play it differently… They play it on the lower part of the neck to change the tone? Well my question is how do you know when to play chords and tabs on the low part of the neck? What I mean by “low” is closer to the direction of the pick guard. Thanks
I think two main conditions dictate where you play power chords.
1. Position
If I’m playing something like an A5 and I want to go to an E5 above it, I have two choices…
——— ———- –9—-
—7—- –14—– –7—-
—5—- –12—– ——–I can either go up to the 12th fret or I can go up to the 7th fret of the A string. That’s the closer of the two, and would be the one I would prefer to go to. Any time I *don’t* have to move my hands a lot, I prefer, since that means its easier on me and I can play faster/more accurately.
On the other hand, if the next riff was using notes around the 12th fret, then I would prefer to go up to that E5 chord on the 12th fret – I’m going to have to go there anyways, might as well get it over with.
So, some planning and thinking ahead is going to be to your benefit. The technical term for all of this is “position”. If my hands are at the 5th fret, then I’m at the “5th position”…. but yeah, I’ve explained the basic concept.
2. Tone.
Power chords on lower strings have more bass, which helps give you a fatter, chunkier tone. A power chord on the E string will have a fatter, warmer, bassier sound than the same power chord on the A string. It won’t be a huge difference in the case I outlined above, but if I felt that I absolutely needed this fatter tone, then yeah, I’d go up to the 12th fret, sure.
This is one reason why playing power chords on the D string isn’t as common – thinner tone. I would almost always choose playing the same chord in the A string vs playing it on the D string, for that reason.
PS The general terminology is to refer to the notes closer to the pickguard as being “higher up”, since the notes rise in pitch as they get closer to the pickguard/bridge/pickups. So, playing a note on the 12th fret is playing “higher up the neck” rather than the other way around.
