Guitar Frets?
Okay – My first guitar was a cheap Peavey Raptor. I didn’t buy it, I just ended up playing it for three years. I recently purchased a much better quality Ibanez S470. It had jumbo frets. They were a lot bigger than the frets on the Peavey, but I figured I could get used to them. I did, but today when I picked up my old guitar and started to play it, I noticed that I was able to play MUCH better with medium frets instead of jumbo frets.
I’m thinking about having my Ibanez re-fretted with medium instead of jumbo. How much would this normally cost ($USD) and is it something that I could do myself?
Additional Info
- 22 frets
- 490 mm neck radius (nearly flat)The playability issues that you are having could be a number of things other than the frets. Most people seem to find jumbo frets easier to use. I am the other way around and I prefer really small frets, but its more for tonal reasons that playability reasons. Playability could be effected by fretboard radius, action, scale length, etc. All of these things are much easier, and cheaper (with the exception of re-radiusing a board) to adjust. Refretting a guitar is very difficult and isn’t something that you can just do yourself without experience. Plus a refret will cost about $250 dollars….or more. You can by the way go down in size to a smaller fret the fretslots themselves are nut (usually) effected by the size of the fretwire. But, If I were you I would have the Ibanez set up by a professional luthier (Much cheaper than a refret) before you decide what to do. Ibanez guitars are usually pretty well playing instruments, and should play much better than your old Raptor.
