Good acoustic guitar for a gal with small hands?
Can someone recommend a good small guitar? I’m a small girl with small hands. I’m playing on a crappy 38″ guitar right now, something I literally found in the street. Though the size is perfect, its poor quality is really starting to bug me. I’ve been looking at the Big Baby Taylor, the Taylor GS Mini, etc. Can anyone recommend any other high-quality small guitars (<40")? I don't want to buy a guitar only to realise in a few months that it's a hunk of crap. I want a good investment. Thanks!
The best thing you could do is go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of different guitars. Each brand tends to have i.ts own feel and some have much thicker necks than others, which makes them challenging for people with small hands to play. Because the body depths range from gigantic to very thin, it’s likely you’ll be able to find a full-scale guitar that feels smaller to you because it’s so comfortable to play.
It’s definitely worth checking out some Ibanez guitars, since those have much thinner necks and lower action than most acoustics. I’m female and have ridiculously small hands, so I find guitars with chunky necks physically impossible to play (Epiphones are my worst nightmare, the necks are so freaking fat). I’ve got three Ibanez acoustics and one Ibanez acoustic-electric, all of which feel like they were custom made for me. They’re also built like rocks, sound great and are often nicer than guitars costing twice as much.
There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all guitar, so the only way to know which brand/guitar is right for you is to compare a bunch of them. Be sure to try them while sitting, since that’s probably how you’ll practice. But many of the thin-bodied acoustics are as comfortable to play as smaller-scale guitars.
