The perfect guitar pick-ups for metal?
I’m looking for guitar pick-up for a TRUE Heavy metal sound i mean real heavy metal like slayer, metallica, motorhead, judas priest and megadeth not that crap they have today. If it helps I use my ESP Alexi-600 Blacky and ESP Clockwork Zombie. The clockwork zombie has emg 81 & 60 humbuckers (like every metal band has nowadays so it’s obvious why i want to change them) and the Alexi-600 Blacky has an EMG HZ F-H2 p.u. i want to put something in that makes it sound heavier.
Sorry i forgot to put that saul well right now i just have a practice amp but i’m getting (well trying to find a place that has it) a Blackstar HT Stage 100 Guitar Amplifier Head and Blackstar HTV 412 Guitar Speaker Cabinet – 4×12 inch, AngledWell, first off, I can understand why you want to change the HZ’s. EMG’s passive pickups blow.
A buddy of mine plays guitar in a heavy rock band. He has a Daisy Rock guitar (hot pink, no less) loaded with Seymour Duncan Blackouts. He plays through a Marshall MG 100w head through a Marshall 1960a cab. The Blackouts really brought out a ton of mids and chunk out of the guitar over the stock pups, with a much more clearly defined treble. Marshall MG’s are slagged on quite often by tube snobs, but I gotta give the guy credit – he’s got a great tone going on! He sounded okay through his stock cab, but when I sold him my Marshall 1960a cab it really brought the thing to life. I can’t emphasize enough that an amp needs to be coupled with a solid speaker cab!
Anyways, the Blackouts have a great chunky tone to them. His guitar with EMGs has a more clearly defined “cut” with definitely a more modern metal voicing, but those Blackouts definitely have a warmer, rounder, darker quality with all of the low end that the EMGs lack.
What I’m trying to figure out is why you haven’t mentioned what the rest of your gear is. What amp are you using? The amp/speaker combination is crucial to getting a good heavy tone – if you aren’t packing a decent backline, you won’t be happy with your tone, period.
DiMarzio makes some good pickups, absolutely, and I absolutely agree with Adam that EMGs tend to have a very compressed, dull, lifeless tone to them. At least, they sure don’t work for me – they work great for my buddy, so I guess its to each his own, right?
My preference is to use lower-output pups in the neck, higher output pups in the bridge, all passive, with an onboard preamp. This gives me the benefits of each – less compressed tone from passive pickups, and the lower output impedance of active electronics (no worries about tone loss from crappy or long runs of cable!!!).
I don’t look to my rhythm pickups to get my tone per se – I look to get a nice hot signal that I can use to drive my distortion pedal/amp/whatever. I can always EQ before/after distortion if I want to sculpt my tone. When you’re talking high-gain, it’s all about the EQ….
