customizing a fender strat?
this is my first time doing this and i was going to go all black (body, pickguard, pickups, tone and volume knobs, pickup selector switch, and maybe the machine heads (tuners) and bridge) I’m going to be playing mostly rock on it so should i just go 3 single coils or go with an HSS set (or maybe HSH) up i still want to be able to get a strat sound out if it though (mainly when playing with no gain) i have (a) humbucker(s) picked out if its going to be HSS (or HSH) but what would be (a) good single coil(s)
Science has not only enabled us to have a H pup but also a H pup stacked so it looks like a single coil. You might want to look into that.
As for a Strat sounding like a strat, it’d have to be single coils all the way. If you have a cheapy strat copy you can experiment on, get at it & try all kinds of combos & see what sounds best TO YOU. Eddie Van Halen did the same before he finally went & struck gold w/ his Charvel-based strat which into which he wired a humbucker at the bridge & pretty much left it at that. This original ‘Frankenstein” has a single coil at the neck & no pup at the middle but he stated in an old guitar mag that the neck pup is disconnected. So its entirely the bridge pup. That written, the guitar still has its pup selector switch which he would flick in order to get that ‘loose connection’ effect while flicking between the h pup & a dead connection.
