This Questions Is About Building A Homemade Electric Guitar……?
I Am entering a contest for building homemade instruments and I building An Electric guitar and the only problem is that everything has to be homemade(which Means I Can’t Use Real Guitar Tuning Machines) But Can Use Zither Pins As Tuning Machines and I was wondering if any body had a few suggestions on how to make them work better and last longer?(like putting around them a putting them in in the holes on the headstock to keep them from slipping under tensions Or something?) I plan to use Extra Light Guitar Strings! Like The High E Being .009 And The Low E Being .042w!Or Something Please Help Me Out!
I Mean Like Putting Thin Cardboard Into The Hole To Keep Them From Slipping Or Use Black Hocky Grip Tape Around The Zither Pins Or What?I’ve used zither pins on a number of instruments and I’ve never had any trouble with them. You definitely don’t want something soft near them, you want the material to be as hard as possible. They will last longer in hardwood such as oak or maple, but they’ll work fine in a softer wood like poplar too. If you’re really concerned, after drilling the hole you can put some super glue in it to add a hard layer to the wood. If your zither pins do eventually wear out, you can get oversize zither pins. Also, i used standard light guitar strings on mine (mostly because i don’t use a truss rod in the neck) but again if you’re concerned, you can use different thicknesses of fishing line. Of course, if you do that you won’t be able to use a wound pickup, you’d need to use a piezo pickup. However, both of them are very easy to make yourself.
