Could I use custom light strings (.011 – .052) if I want to tune my acoustic guitar down to Drop B?
I have an acoustic steel string guitar, and I’m about to replace its strings. I want to keep this guitar in C#/Db Standard Tuning, and perhaps I’ll also use Drop B Tuning. But the only replacement strings I have at the moment are these “custom light” ones (.011 – .052). Would they work? Or should I go out and get heavier strings? Thanks!
No problem to use to use those. They may feel a little loose as you tune down, but it won’t harm the guitar (I do take it for granted the guitar is a steel string instrument and not a nylon string/classical one).
By changing the string tension – either by going up or down in string gauge, or tuning down – you may need to have the truss rod slightly adjusted. This is a quick and easy procedure for anyone who knows what they’re doing.
You should also be aware that tuning too far down on a regular scale guitar neck (scale is the length of the vibrating string), the guitar is doomed to be slightly out of tune even if you change to heavier strings.
There are instruments built to accommodate lower tunings, they are called baritone guitars (somewhat of a cross between a bass and a regular guitar). These instruments have a longer scale.
