How much to fix broken tone knob on guitar?
I was trying to remove my volume knob off of my Gibson Les Paul. I turned it too hard and broke something inside so now the knob just spins around and around but doesn’t adjust the volume. Any ideas on how much to fix it, or how to fix it?
LucasMan is right…a volume pot is very inexpensive. For the same price that you can pay somebody to fix it, you can buy a soldering iron and replace it yourself. This is not rocket science, and there is a wealth of instructional information on the web…which is more than I ever had when I learned to do this stuff. If you’ve never soldered before, it’s a good idea to practice on a few bits of wire before you dig into your Les Paul. http://www.ehow.com/how_6755916_change-pots-les-paul-guitar.html I’ve read that you have to pull straight up to get the knobs off. Some people recommend wrapping a shoelace under it and pulling up from both sides.
Every electric guitar player should know how to solder and make small repairs…just my opinion of course. I can’t begin to tell you how many cables I’ve salvaged by putting on a new plug. If you really don’t feel comfortable working around a hot iron, by all means take your guitar to a shop.
