Is the fact that a Les Paul junior has only one pick up putting the guitar at a disadvantage for tone?
The P-90 at the neck sounds good on distortion i think, i’m not so clued up about the sounds on clean. Does having only one pickup narrow the tone settings that much, even with the tone knob and a decent amp?
cheersSure, it may be seen as a disadvantage to have one pickup rather than two or three. That said, many players get almost infinite combinations of sounds out of a one-pick-up guitar.
The way I see it, having a more basic set-up forces you to learn how to play the amp and the guitar properly.With the term properly I’m thinking about knowing how to use the volume and tone control on the guitar, your pick Attack, vibrato, where you pick the strings, change between fingers and pick etc. For example, the best players tend to use a cranked up tube amp and then clean it up with the volume on the guitar.
Add a couple of effects to a great amp/guitar combo, and you have the possibility to change your sounds until the cows come home … and then some
I can agree with you about the clean sound on the P-90. However, they tend to shine on some first class tube amps. Through a Vox AC-30, Bad Cat, Matchless or similar amps they sound absolutely fantastic in my opinion. Not Fender type clean, more of a slightly “rough edge” kind of clean
