How can I remove the knobs on a mortise lockset?
It is a Corbin knob mortise set with a cylinder to retract the latch on one side and the two push buttons on the mortise box plate to lock/unlock the knob. My issue is I want to re-swing the door so I need to reverse the latch. I have easily taken out the cylinder, but I don’t know how to take the knobs off to pull the mortise box out of the door. There are no set screws or slots in the knob at all. It is very old Corbin commercial hardware. I really want to reuse this door to hang in my house, but I need to reverse the latch. How do I remove the knobs?
I can take the 4 screws off of the face plates on each side, but this doesn’t do anything either. There definitely isn’t any set screws or slots on the knobs anywhere. It is from the early 1900′s.Without actually seeing the lock I can only guess but did you try to take the plates off the door? Although most knobs have a screw that when removed you can pull the knobs off there is also another lesser used method where the knob is attached to the plate on either side of the door. once the plate on one side is removed the shaft connecting the 2 knobs can be removed as well as the plate on the other side. The knobs and the plates come off as 1 piece. Hope this helps.
