How to I get my electric guitar to hold notes (sustain) longer?
It’s my first one and I’ve been trying to adjust all the knobs on the guitar and the amp itself but the notes don’t last any longer, they just last like a regular acoustic guitar. How do you get the notes to “sing” or sustain indefinitely?? Thanks!
I only have 2 knobs on the guitar itself, one for volume, the other for “tone”. And the amp just has volume on it, and then bass, treble, middle, presence.While there are a number of different ways to approach this (higher output pickups, a higher quality guitar with better tone wood, onboard preamp, etc), the two most common ways to get better sustain are better technique, ie a good strong vibrato, and gain aka overdrive aka distortion.
Your amp doesn’t come with any built-in distortion. Even a little gain will help you hold your notes out longer. Try playing through a few distortion pedals at your local music shop and see if any fit your personal preferences (and budget!). Some of the lower price point options include the Boss DS-1, many of the various Danelectro pedals, and I think something like the Digitech Bad Monkey even.
Obviously, some will give you more distortion than others…. a Tubescreamer is relatively light in the distortion area (until you turn up the gain), the DS-1 has more grit and gain (very alternative and punky), up until you get into metal pedals like the Boss Metalcore, ElectroHarmonix Metal Muff, etc, which tend to have all kinds of gain on tap. Another option is to get a fuzz pedal… I’ve played around with the Seymour Duncan Tweak fuzz, which is a pretty cool little pedal, and the sound of a light fuzz is pretty cool, it brings out a lot of flavor and harmonics without necessarily having to sound like an angry swarm of bees =).
The tone knob on your guitar, btw, is basically a treble control – with it all the way up you keep your high end, with it all the way back you’ve cut most of your high end. I tend to prefer my tone knob either all the way up or rolled back just a little for an ever so slightly warmer, mellower tone. I rarely have the guitar’s volume on anything but all the way up.
