double neck bass guitar, fretless/fretted?
I find myself switching back and forth between my fretless 4-string P-bass with a fender jazz neck and my 5-string Carvin fretted bass.
I play in a band with a guy who writes a kind of funk/blusey/pop-rock, so I try to get both the Jaco fretless sound and Flea funk sound (although I’ll never measure up to either, lol). There’s one song in particular that has a fast, funky verse and a slow, melodic chorus, but it’s hard enough to switch between songs (often we go from song to song without a break), and switching in the middle of a song is out of the question.
I know I’d loose cool points in some people’s eyes with a geeky double neck bass, but aesthetics aside, do y’all think it would work well? What issues would there be? Would the two jazz necks be to neck-heavy? Where would I get a body? (Warmoth has a P-strat double body) Should the top neck be right hand and the bottom left so the tuners are more accessible? Thanks!

I definitely would not consider a double neck to be “geeky”! After all, Geddy Lee in his early years played a 12 string guitar/4 string bass doubleneck Rickenbacker!
Ok… on to your dilemma. Im enclosing a link for a 4 string frettless/5 string fretted that wont kill ya for what your getting. While you wont find these guitars at MF, GC, Sam Ash or other music sites, they ARE decent instruments. The brand is Galveston, and for the most part, they get decent reviews. Here’s the link:

These are Korean made basses. I believe a hardshell case is also included. Ive never played the doubleneck Galvestons, but, I have played 4,5,and 6 string models that were fretted and fretless. Everyone I have played is a very decent instrument. From my experience with these, there probably will be some “tweaking” involved, but they have good fit and finish, easy playing fretboards, and sound wise… very suprising I must say. Upgrading the bridge and tuning keys later on would make this a killer bass. Ive yet to play one with bad lifeless pickups. As far as building one yourself, cant help out to much as far which companies to go to. Left-T would be one to help on that.
