2 questions. Will guitar center restring my bass? and what are the best bass strings to buy?
Hi, i recently got a fender deluxe active jazz bass and a part on the bridge looked messed up so i loosened my E string and fixed it and when ituned it up, it buzzed alot. so i just took the strings off before i did any real damage. i dont know how to restring a bass but i know its more complicated that a 6 string guitar. so my question is does guitar center restirng bass guitars, and what are the best strings to use for a jazz bass? i play mostly classic rock.
Yes guitar center does restring basses. As for what type of strings to get I think it’s better to give you some general information first. Bass strings come in three basic categories: Roundwound, flatwound and groundwound strings. Roundwound strings are the most common. They have a somewhat rough texture under your fingers and can eat away at frets faster then other strings. The advantage of roundwound strings is they have a bright tone that’s a must for certain playing techniques like slap bass. Most of the time you’re picking between stainless steel roundwound and nickel roundwound. Stainless steel has the very bright sound and can add a lot of “clank” and finger noise to your sound. Nickel has some brightness but doesn’t extenuate the “clank” and finger noise as much as stainless steel. Flatwound strings have a very smooth texture and are very gentle on your frets. Flatwounds have a “mushy” midrange tone that may sound “dead” when compared to bright roundwound strings. Flatwounds have less sustain then roundwound strings however for most bass styles this isn’t a major concern. Groundwound strings are a compromise between roundwound and flatwound strings. They have the smooth texture feel of flatwounds with some brightness like a roundwound string. For classic rock if you’re playing more of the newer classic rock like the late 70’s and the 80’s I would go with nickel roundwound strings. If you’re more of a 60’s and early 70’s kind of guy I would go with flatwounds for that vintage “thump”.
XBaBoonX does a lot of good flatwound/roundwound comparison videos and it’s a good place to listen to the difference between different types and brands of strings.
