Is it safe to put a drink with dry ice in a Polycarbonate or Acrylic container for Halloween?
I want to make a huge batch (2-5 gallons) of Kool Aid and put dry ice in it to make it “fog” for a fun drink effect for Halloween, but I am not sure what type of container would be safe for the kiddies. I would like something that is translucent or clear like a Polycarbonate or Acrylic container, but I am not sure it is safe and won’t crack. The container would have a spout, so they would not get into the container, but I just want to make sure that the container won’t crack or emit any harmful fumes created by a reaction with the dry ice.
The beverage with the dry ice would be in a large container that has a spout/dispenser that only the beverage should come out of. Is there danger of melted slivers coming out of the spout?I’m not really clear on your intentions. If you plan to put dry ice into the punch, fine – as long as you’re serving and no ice gets into the kid’s glasses. If you plan to put dry ice into a plastic container and set it inside the punch bowl so the fog pours out the spout, fine. (there shouldn’t be any reaction between the dry ice and the plastic. Dry ice is essentially frozen carbon dioxide and which is the same thing that gives soda its bubbles). In order the get the ice to give off a lot of fog, you’d need to constantly add hot water to its container.
I would not recommend allowing the children to handle or drink anything with dry ice in it. Even a little splinter of dry ice can cause frostbite should it come into contact with skin, and you certainly don’t want to be making trips to the emergency room to treat frostbit lips, gums, tongues or throats. So if the container with the spout is a sippy cup to be given to the kids, I’d say don’t do it.
