How do you wire the pickups on an electric guitar?
I want to build a cheap electric guitar over Christmas and have no idea how to wire the pickups. I was inspired by the story of Eddie Van Halen’s creating of his Frankenstrat. I’ve found a neck and body on ebay but still have no idea how to wire the pickups.
I only want 1 humbucking pickup to make things easy. I want to build this with a Strat-style body. This will be with a tremolo bridge also if that matter (not a hardtail).
PS- What are some good yet inexpensive humbucking pickups?
Let me get this straight – you’re going to build your own guitar, and you’re going to tackle a floating trem right off the bat without ever having built a guitar before? Holy crap you have no idea what you’re in for….
I like Seymour Duncan pickups. I’ve put JBs in many of my guitars and they tend to have a nice, rounded sound, good for just about any style except the thrash and death metal stuff… at least without a fair bit of EQ. Your choice may vary, depending on the style you’re going for.
My personal suggestion would be to start with a fully assembled guitar and swap out parts… this is basically what artists like EVH and Kurt Cobain have done when they’ve customized their own guitars extensively. Building a guitar from the ground up is a somewhat daunting task, especially if you’ve never done it before. It will not be cheaper than buying a new guitar, it will have a whole heap of problems in terms of diagnosing the mistakes you’ve made along the way… although I can definitely say it can be worth it, sure.
Do you know the type of sound you want, or are you kinda just doing a Hail Mary and hoping for the best? Again, after reading a fair bit on how Kurt Cobain approached his “jag-stang” it is evident that he started from an idea of combining two guitars and focusing on a certain look, a certain feel, and a certain sound. It will really help you if you have these objectives in mind.
For instance – you know that floating tremolos go out of tune a lot easier than normal fixed bridges, right? And that they require a lot more maintenance and upkeep than normal? And that you have to completely re-setup your strings/springs if you change string gauges, change strings, or change tunings?
It’s not as bad for the trems that just bend one way – they aren’t as unstable, but still go out of tune faster than the fixed bridges. I would urge you to consider if you *really* *need* the floating trem as an integral part of your style…. if so, I would suggest getting a guitar that already has one installed and customizing it.
The other answerers have given you good resources, it seems, so I’m trying to give you a word of caution. Read up on it, research it, before you go out on a limb and buy a bunch of random necks and bodies and parts and expect a usable result from it.
It’s good to be inspired by our musical heros, but it’s important that we learn what we’re trying to do before we rush out to emulate them.
