Why are my higher frets muted?
I asked this same question before but failed to add all the necessary details.
Frets 15-20 on my Squire electric guitar are almost completely muted. They hardly ring at all, so bends down on those tiny frets don’t carry at all hardly and it just sounds awful.
Squire isn’t known for having the most expensive guitars in the world. I’m aware that it’s a cheap guitar. In June I’m going to replace the bridge pickup with a Lil Screamin’ Demon single coil sized humbucker which is several times more powerful than the single coil piece of s**t I have in my guitar now.
I know how to play guitar. I’m pressing plenty hard.
Does anyone know why frets 15-20 are muted!?
Supposing you play properly, there are not that many possibilities.
Either one or more of your pickups is too close to the strings (as others have suggested), or there’s a problem with your neck or frets.
I would be very surprised if this isn’t caused by a bowed neck. If you look along the neck from the headstock towards the bridge, the neck should look perfectly straight. Some times it seems straight but is warped (think airplane propeller).
You may also have one or more loose frets causing this problem. The only way to say for sure is to take it to a qualified repair shop or luthier.
If it is a bowed neck, then a simple truss rod adjustment and height adjustment of the strings and pickups will usually fix your problem. Not expensive at all. Anything else may cost more than the value of the guitar.
