What can be said about guitar bodies?
Here I was looking at parts and pieces to build a custom guitar from the ground up, something that can play pretty Blues. I’ve settled on a neck and now it’s time to look at most of the things around the body.
First, I’ve heard from a few friends who differ in opinion about the body. One says that shape of the guitar body in an electric is good for aesthetics only and tone boils down to the pickups, and another tells me that body shape makes a huge difference. I tend to pick the side of friend number 2 since he mostly plays electric while number 1 plays mostly classical (I think body shape can make an overall big, if subtle difference). I’m not entirely certain myself since I haven’t had many chances to hear the difference between guitars.
On that note, what sort of wood and pickups would be nice for a Blues player to use?
I would say shape on an electric would make a good difference. A shape that does not have lots of volume would not sustain as long as that of a larger shape. The sustain also would depend on the wood used, denser wood usually sustains longer I believe. Then again sometimes it’s just how all the parts are put together also. Best thing to do is trial before buying. Guitars can sound very different though. I have two cheap ones but they are totally opposite. One actually sounds horrible to me but it was a freebie and the other one sound decent. Both are strat like bodies but one is a much lighter wood, the one that sounds horrible to me.
For blues you want that sustain though. Shape probably would not make much of a difference on an electric if the material were the same and the body was around the same mass, but you never know?? Yeh though tone does depend on the body also!!!
